Qualification Requirements

Rhode Island Nonresident Pistol Permit Qualification

To obtain a Rhode Island nonresident concealed carry permit, applicants must hold a pistol permit from another state and complete the shooting qualification required by Rhode Island. We provide the Rhode Island shooting qualification and application certification at Connecticut Firearms Training Academy in Berlin, CT.

The shooting qualification consists of firing a total of 30 consecutive rounds with a semi-automatic pistol or revolver at 25 yards using an Army L target. A minimum score of 195 points (65%) is required to pass. The shooting qualification is limited to 30 minutes.

Handgun and Caliber

Shooters may use a handgun of their choice, of any action and caliber, with non-magnifying sights. The caliber used for the qualification determines the largest caliber the permit holder may carry under the Rhode Island license. For example, a shooter who qualifies with a .22 caliber handgun may carry .22 caliber handguns, while a shooter who qualifies with a .45 caliber handgun may carry .45 caliber handguns and smaller calibers.

A Rhode Island concealed carry permit is valid for four years and costs $40. For nonresident applicants, we recommend applying through the Cranston, Foster or East Greenwich police departments.

Pass or Fail Qualification

The qualification is pass or fail. Any student who does not successfully qualify on the first attempt will receive one additional attempt on the same day and at the same scheduled session.

Rhode Island Qualification Options

Choose the option that best fits your needs. You may qualify using your own handgun and ammunition or use one of our .45 caliber handguns with ammunition provided.

Option 1

Qualification With Your Own Handgun

Option 1 is for shooters who are ready to complete the qualification using their own handgun and ammunition.

Bring your Rhode Island application, handgun and at least 30 rounds of ammunition. We recommend bringing additional ammunition if you would like to warm up before shooting the qualification.

We will provide the Army L target, administer the shooting qualification, score your target, sign and notarize your application, and provide the required documentation you need to submit with your application.

Option 2

Qualification With Our .45 Caliber Handgun

Option 2 is for shooters who are ready to complete the qualification but do not have their own handgun, or who would like to qualify with a larger caliber handgun.

Bring your Rhode Island application and we will provide a .45 caliber pistol, with your choice of either a 1911 or SIG P227, and a total of 50 rounds of ammunition.

The 50 rounds include 20 rounds for practice followed by the 30-round qualification. If additional ammunition is required for a second qualification attempt, there will be an additional charge.

We will provide the Army L target, administer the shooting qualification, score your target, sign and notarize your application, and provide the required documentation you need to submit with your application.
