Annual Qualification for Retired Law Enforcement Officers
Qualified retired law enforcement officers may be eligible to carry a concealed firearm nationwide under the Law Enforcement Officers Safety Act (LEOSA), commonly known as HR218. One of the requirements for qualified retired law enforcement officers is completion of the required firearms qualification within the applicable annual period.
Connecticut Firearms Training Academy provides LEOSA HR218 annual firearms qualification and certification for qualified retired law enforcement officers in Connecticut.
CT POST Certified Firearms Instructor
Instructor Gary Belanger is a Connecticut POST Certified Firearms Instructor and provides HR218 qualification and certification for qualified retired law enforcement officers.
This provides retired officers with an option to complete their annual LEOSA firearms qualification without having to schedule qualification through their former department.
LEOSA Eligibility
In order to attend this qualification, you must provide proof of retirement from a qualifying law enforcement agency, possess a Connecticut Permit to Carry Pistols and Revolvers, and meet all other applicable eligibility requirements for a qualified retired law enforcement officer under 18 U.S. Code § 926C.
Firearms & Ammunition
The qualification session takes approximately two hours. You will need to provide the firearm you intend to carry under LEOSA and 100 rounds of ammunition for that firearm.
You may also bring a second handgun if you wish to have two handguns listed on your HR218 identification card. You will need 100 rounds of ammunition for each firearm.
Ammunition for Qualification
Practice ammunition may be used for the qualification. Retired officers should, however, consider the potential need to explain their firearm, ammunition and qualification choices in the event of a future incident or legal proceeding.

Qualification Identification
LEOSA Qualification Identification Card
Upon successful completion of the firearms qualification, your photo will be taken and you will receive a photo identification card documenting your qualification under LEOSA. The identification card will be provided within 10 days and is valid for one year from the date of qualification.
